"Smile" circa 1992 (charcoal and white chalk on newsprint sketch paper)

I went to a community college after high school and I took one art class. Each project required different paper and medium which got really expensive and my Pell grant didn't cover all of it so I had to drop the idea of taking art classes. I had a bunch of paper and other materials left over so this drawing was one I did after I dropped out of school. It is charcoal and white chalk on newsprint sketch paper. This drawing is still one of my favorite pieces even after all these years.

"Beauty in Hand" circa 1992 (oil pastels on sketch paper)

I drew this when I was living outside of Tucson, AZ near the Saguaro National Monument. I picked up a flower from the ground and when I looked at it in my hand, I was inspired to make some art from the moment. Another one of my favorite items from that time in my life.

"Pear and Leaf" Still Life Sketch circa 1992 (charcoal on newsprint sketch paper)

When I took art in college, I had to buy supplies for each new project. Very different than what I was used to from elementary, junior high, and high school! Also interesting to me is that very few of my college art projects were anything that I would be willing to share.

This particular piece is NOT a college assignment but was made around that time in my life with charcoal and sketch paper left from college projects. Every project seemed to need a different kind of paper and medium. I ended up quitting art because I was only a part time student and the grants were not enough to cover all of the projects so I had to come out of pocket for most of them.

Sometimes I wish that I would have been able to finish and get at least an Associates Degree in some kind of art field, but life just didn't happen that way.

"Wind" circa1986 (acrylic on cardboard canvas)

This is another sophomore in high school advanced art project. I think the assignment was a combination of composition and nature or wind or something like that. This is still one of my favorite pieces I did from that class. A lot of my best work to date was from that younger, more carefree time of my life when materials and specific inspiration were provided for me.
